| This page contains vintage equipment from the 1970's and 1980's that I have obtained over the years and planned to one day wear on the ice to look just as Vladislav Tretiak had in his illustrious career.
Recently, while renting ice at a local rink I decided to put on the replica equipment that you see in these photos and that Tretiak had used during his career, and let me tell you, what a difference from equipment I am strapping on today. You certainly don't feel protected in this gear!
While being able to walk and skate quite normally (without the penguin syndrome), I quickly realized that when facing a shooter, don't even consider standing on the painted crease. You better take away a whole lot of angle if you want that puck to have half a chance of hitting you! |
|
| However I did feel that I was much more mobile, quicker (sort of), and that I had to really plan my moves much more precisely. I fould that the rebound control on these pads was great. The puck never deflected off the pad in the way that the newer pads do.
The blocker I found the same in use, but, the glove, thats a different story. Unless the puck 'wedges' in the glove, I found myself bobbling it quite often and not catching it cleanly. I would have to pop the puck in the air and catch it on the way down from underneath. I have seen this many a times while watching vintage hockey games.
But, in general, it was a very fun experience and I am looking forward to doing it again. |

| The equipment that I was wearing on this day was a Cooper SK600 helmet with a Cooper HM30 cage. A Cooper GM12 blocker along with a Cooper GM21 catching glove. The pants are Cooper (not sure of the model number) held up with Cooper PSL44 suspenders and a Cooper DJSM cup (most important).
The upper body gear was a pair of Cooper SA66 shoulder pads with a Cooper BA35 chest protector. The goalpads are Cooper GP59's, although the number is not visable any more. The socks unfortunately I can not find the typical red with a white stripe (maybe, for next time). The jersey is a replica 80's Soviet Red Army stiched CCCP. The Koho goal stick is a replicated Model 231. I spent
quite a few hours creating stencils from photograps that I have and painting the stick up on a blank straight blade stick I bought a few years back. It was my first try at replicating it, so it's not perfect, but the next one will be better. |

| The following pictures are of the equipment used in the game as well as other replica model types that Vladislav Tretiak used in games throughout the 1970's and 1980's. Some of the items still need some final touches to make them look more authentic and that will be a project for next winter. |
